“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit”. -Psalm 34:18
I am writing this devotional on the 5 year anniversary of my Dad’s death. Oh how I find myself desperately needing comfort for my heart, mind and soul today. David reminds us in Psalm 34 that God chooses to move close to the brokenhearted. He draws close and brings comfort right when we need it. Sometimes, we don’t know what to do when we see someone hurting. We may back off—but God doesn’t. He moves toward us because He is so loving and compassionate.
I recently read an article that even the Surgeon General of the United States has stated there is an epidemic of loneliness and hurting. He compared this epidemic to the damage of smoking 15 cigarettes per day. He went on to encourage the lonely and hurting to attend their local church. WOW! A prescription to GO TO CHURCH! You and I know that comfort won’t come from a church, but it does come from the Lord of our church, who will draw close to the brokenhearted.
Please pray with me:
Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for drawing close to my broken heart. Help me to point this lost and hurting world to YOU, the Great Physician and Comforter. Amen
